You have to water most new plants for at least a year!!!
And during drought conditions at least 3 years from planting. Some plants require moist ground others more dry ground check the tag or ask what they need. The only way to tell if they need water is to feel the soil with your finger. Stick your finger in the ground around the ball as far a you can. If the soil is dry they need to be watered. Set a hose by the plant and let the water trickle in the ground until it's good and wet. (The time depends on the size of the ball usually 1/2 hr. to 2 hours each) Watering plants deep encourages deep root systems. For shrubs you can do the same but not as long, or water them with a nozzle. The frequency of watering depends on the weather and your soil. The only way to tell is to test the ground. (to much water, as in swamp, can kill some plants.) Normally in Winter, Spring and Fall you don't have to water much, but you should check when we haven't had rain for awhile.(even in winter check before we have a hard freeze, evergreens need water all year and roots can freeze dry if the soil is dry) Lawn Sprinkler Systems(Lawns have different water needs than trees and shrubs) If you have a sprinkler system check with the company that installed it to see if they have shrub heads and put them on a different zone than your lawn. Set the zone to go on as needed. |
Fertilizing New Trees and ShrubsMix the root stimulator according to directions and drench the root ball with the mix. After the first year use tree or all purpose fertilizers ie. Miracle Gro, Grow for trees , they come in granule, spikes and liquids. Use them according to directions. Fertilize at the drip line and a little beyond. see fig.1 fig.1
